Jordanians vote for newly empowered parliament

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) ? Jordanians voted Wednesday for a parliament with wider authority as the monarchy cedes some of its powers to try to prevent simmering dissent from boiling over into a full blown Arab uprising.

Most notably, the new legislature will be able to choose the prime minister, one of a series of reforms King Abdullah II has undertaken over the past two years to try to keep the lid on rising anger at home as political turmoil has swept across the Middle East. The reforms also make the elected legislature responsible for much of the nation's day-to-day affairs, and allow for greater freedom of opinion and assembly. Foreign policy and security matters, however, remain ? at least for now ? in the hands of the king.

The 2011 Arab Spring uprisings in the region set off a wave of demonstrations in Jordan, although nothing on the scale of the protests that toppled autocratic leaders in Egypt, Libya, Yemen and Tunisia, let alone the revolt in neighboring Syria that has descended into a bloody civil war. Mindful of the turmoil around him, Abdullah has introduced the reforms at home in a measured manner, trying to manage the pace of change.

To that end, the king has touted the election as the first step on the path to greater democracy. His critics, however, have dismissed the vote as little more than a political ploy, and argue that the monarchy will still retain its absolute powers. The country's main opposition group, the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, boycotted the election.

Authorities kept polling stations open for an extra hour to allow more people to vote. Independent Electoral Commission spokesman Hussein Bani Hani said initial figures put turnout at 56.5 percent of Jordan's 2.3 million registered voters. He said the final percentage may be slightly higher after the data is fed to a nationwide computer system.

David Martin, the European Union Chief Election Observer, said voting got off to a relatively smooth start, with only one or two insignificant violations of rules due to campaigning outside polling stations, and "no intimidation or harassment of voters." EU observers are stationed in all of Jordan's 12 governorates, he said.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, Jordan's last appointed premier who is expected to tender his resignation to the king shortly after the vote, called the election a "stepping stone, or a station, on the path of more vigorous, serious, real and genuine reforms."

"More democracy is coming," he told reporters as he cast his ballot in his northwestern hometown of Salt.

But government critics, led by the Brotherhood, say the king's moves do not go far enough or fast enough to end his monopoly on power. The Islamist group is boycotting the vote, as are four smaller parties, including communists and Arab nationalists, on the grounds that an electoral law introduced last year favored the king's loyalists and undercut opposition votes.

"The parliament being elected has no color or taste in the absence of the opposition," said Zaki Bani Irsheid, a leading member of the Islamic Action Front, the Brotherhood's political arm. A statement by the Brotherhood's youth wing described the elections as a "funeral for our national democracy."

But the Brotherhood has been unable to tap into growing public anger over Jordan's economic malaise, rising prices and corruption, in large part because of the deep distrust many Jordanians hold for the Islamist group. Some in Jordan have warily watched the rise to power of the Brotherhood in Egypt, where the Islamists swept to power in elections following that country's own uprising, and fear the group could grab power in Jordan and throw it into instability.

The mixed mood in Jordan was apparent on Wednesday as citizens cast their ballots.

At one polling station at an Amman high school, Madallah Hamid, a 50-year-old government employee, said he was voting because he trusted the king's liberalization moves.

"You don't just press a button and suddenly you have reform and democracy," Hamid said as he rubbed purple ink on his index finger, used to mark those who have already voted. "It's a process and I have confidence in the king's approach."

But outside another polling station across town, convenience store clerk Mohammed Abu-Summaqa, 21, said he would not cast his ballot at all.

"Deputies will not be able to do anything for us because they are controlled by the king and Cabinet, so why should I vote?" he asked.

Julien Barnes-Darcy, a Jordan analyst at the European Council of Foreign Relations, said the elections fall short of the king's initial promises to the public.

"There has been a sense that the reforms haven't gone deep enough," he said. "For that reason, the elections appear to many as much of a missed opportunity as anything else. ... They are neither the concluding moment of a period of reform, nor are they a launch pad for more serious change."

"It really leaves the country in a bit of a standstill and at a problematic moment," he added.

Do I have to attend some type of credit counseling class before I can ...

Since the 2005 amendment to the Bankruptcy Code, you now have to complete a short credit counseling course within 180 days before you will be allowed to file bankruptcy.

However, you do not have to complete this course in person. We can provide you with the details and paperwork for a Court approved credit counseling court service.

The process is short and we can help guide you through it. The credit counseling service will then send us a copy of your credit counseling completion certificate that we must file along with your bankruptcy case.

The Psychology Behind the Importance of Failure

The Psychology Behind the Importance of FailureAlmost every week, we find new ways to remind you of the importance of embracing failure because it's such a good learning experience. While that remains true, accepting the common possibility of failure helps you, too. Here's why.

Our brains don't always act in our best interest and often default to irrational decisions if we don't instruct them otherwise. Heidi Grant Halvorson, writing for productivity and ideas blog the 99u, points out that when we try to eliminate failure we also eliminate a lot of our creative ability:

The problem with the Be-Good mindset is that it tends to cause problems when we are faced with something unfamiliar or difficult. We start worrying about making mistakes, because mistakes mean that we lack ability, and this creates a lot of anxiety and frustration. Anxiety and frustration, in turn, undermine performance by compromising our working memory, disrupting the many cognitive processes we rely on for creative and analytical thinking. Also, when we focus too much on doing things perfectly (i.e., being good), we don't engage in the kind of exploratory thinking and behavior that creates new knowledge and innovation.

While all you really have to do is accept that you're imperfect and allow yourself to make mistakes, you're not going to suddenly lose your anxiety and frustration over failure in an instant. When you fail, continue to remind yourself how important it is that you did and find what you learned from it. Most of us make that effort already, but remember to keep it in mind beforehand as well or you might prevent yourself from doing something great.

Growing A Garden For The Whole Family To Enjoy | My DIY Home ...

Why not learn something new about becoming a better gardener? Don?t waste money on equipment, plants or seeds without first figuring out exactly what you need.

Instead of leaving clumps of irises intact, divide them so that your flowers can grow in a more healthy manner. Splitting up overgrown groups of irises will allow you to easily increase the number of irises in your garden. When the foliage has died off, it is time to harvest the iris bulbs. As soon as you pick up the bulb, it?ll split into pieces. That?s okay ? in fact, it?s desirable. You can replant the bulb pieces and next year you?ll have a healthy bed of new irises. Divide up the rhizomes with a knife. Cut new outside pieces and dispose of the center. Each piece must have a minimum of one strong offshoot. Replant the new shoots right away.

Conserve water by watering your garden with rain water. Collect the rainwater in a container or barrel, which makes for a great natural resource, not only that it saves you money on water bills. Keep this in mind as a way to add a little more to your budget for other things and to make sure your garden is as natural as possible.

Do you enjoy fresh mint, but don?t like how they engulf your garden in their growth? You can control the growth of the mint leaves by growing them in a large container rather than in your garden. You can then plant the container down in the ground if you like, but the walls of the container will hold the roots captive, and keep the plant from taking over your garden!

Maximize use of the colors of autumn. Deciduous vines, trees and shrubs wait until autumn to fully bloom. This will renew your garden with a bright array of fall colors. This change happens because the plants stop producing chlorophyll, and pigments that were previously masked by green begin to show. Make sure your plants get as much sun as possible so they can give more vivid colors. Some great shrubs to use are boston ivy, barberry, chestnut, and maple.

Architect your veggie garden before breaking ground. Make a detailed list of everything that you would like to plant, and include a clear drawing of your available growing space. You can then use that drawing to plan out where each item should be planted. Don?t forget to factor in plant width and height and what each plant requires as far as sunlight and moisture.

If you are growing a vegetable garden, you may find that pests can be difficult to control. You want to avoid spraying harsh chemicals since the vegetables are meant for consumption. So to help you control the pests that may invade your garden, you will want to stay vigilant. If you find any unwanted pests, try removing them by hand.

CO2 is essential for growth. Typically, the higher the levels of carbon dioxide present in a plant?s environment, the better it will grow. A greenhouse will provide plants with an environment rich in carbon dioxide. CO2 levels are best kept high, in order to provide optimal growing conditions for your plants.

If you want to draw advantageous insects to your garden, plant some heather. Heather is very attractive to bees, and when bees first emerge in the spring, it is an early source of nectar. Heather beds are also attractive to bugs such as spiders and ground beetles that will kill pests. With this in mind make sure you wear some gloves when you are working with the heather.

Make a plan for your garden. Doing this makes it easier to keep track of where you planted what when you first start to see sprouts. You might end up losing small plants in a large area, because you did not water them.

Surround your vegetable plants with organic mulch, a few inches worth. The organic mulch will keep moisture in the soil for a little longer. This also helps reduce the appearance of weeds. This will save you having to constantly pull weeds.

Use proper soil for the best results. You should choose your soil depending on the plants that you are going to plant. You can simply use one type of soil to make an artificial area.

Creating a beautiful garden takes a little research, the right equipment, and enough time to enjoy tending it. Once you look upon your amazing garden, you?ll realize that the work has paid off!

One in six cases of adult asthma may be linked to workplace - KFDA ...

MONDAY, Jan. 21 (HealthDay News) -- The type of jobs people have may increase their risk for developing asthma as an adult, a new British study suggests.

Rebecca Ghosh, of Imperial College London, and her colleagues found one in six cases of the condition was linked to the workplace. They noted the development of adult asthma was clearly associated with 18 different occupations, particularly cleaning jobs where people are exposed to chemicals. Other job categories linked to adult asthma were farming, hairdressing and printing.

The study involved 7,500 British adults born in 1958. The researchers examined information on the participants' job histories up to the age of 42. They also compiled information on their symptoms of asthma or wheezy bronchitis at the ages of 7, 11, 16, 33 and 42. The study participants' sensitivity to allergens and lung power was also assessed at the ages of 42 and 45.

Using the Asthma Specific Job Exposure Matrix, the researchers then calculated the participants' exposure to compounds with a known link to asthma, including respiratory irritants and high-risk agents such as flour, enzymes, cleaning or disinfectant products, metal and metal fumes, and textile production.

The study was published online Jan. 21 in the journal Thorax.

Of the study's participants, 25 percent were smokers by the time they were 42. At this age, 9 percent of the adults had asthma and 87 percent had jobs. More than half, or 55 percent, of those who were employed had office jobs.

The researchers also pointed out that 25 percent of the participants never held a job that increased their risk for asthma. The study did reveal, however, that 8 percent had been exposed to high-risk agents and 28 percent were exposed to low-risk agents. Meanwhile, 34 percent were exposed to both high-risk and low-risk agents.

After taking other factors into account, the investigators found 16 percent of adult-onset asthma cases among the participants could be explained by their jobs. While the study found an association, it did not prove that the nature of their occupations caused the onset of asthma.

The study showed those exposed to low-risk agents were 20 percent more likely to develop asthma as an adult. The people exposed to high-risk agents were 53 percent more likely to be diagnosed with the respiratory condition. The participants exposed to both types of agents had a 34 percent greater risk of developing asthma.

The findings suggest jobs involving cleaning or cleaning agents showed the strongest link to adult asthma. Meanwhile, farming more than quadrupled the risk for the condition, hairdressing doubled the risk and printing work tripled the risk, the study authors pointed out in a journal news release.

The HearStrong Foundation Launches Nationwide to Acknowledge the Accomplishments of Those with Hearing Loss

Through its HearStrong Champions, the foundation aims to empower those with hearing loss to take action and understand that hearing better is a strength.

Syracuse, NY (PRWEB) January 21, 2013

Do you know someone who tackled hearing loss and accomplished a life goal? Don?t they deserve to be recognized? The HearStrong Foundation will shatter social stigmas and radically challenge the general perception of hearing loss in our society today by celebrating individuals who have not only faced hearing loss, but conquered it with a determined spirit, a focused mind and an unwavering heart.

Known as HearStrong Champions, these men, women and children are the cornerstone of the foundation, which is funded through the generosity of EarQ providers. People will nominate patients, friends, coworkers and family members who have refused to let hearing loss deter them from their goals to be named an official HearStrong Champion. Once selected by the foundation, champions will be celebrated in an official naming ceremony at their local provider?s office. By publicizing champions in local and national press, the foundation can empower the 80% of people with hearing loss who have yet to seek assistance and motivate them to take control of their hearing health.

?We want to show the highly active and vibrant men, women and children who overcome hearing loss every day,? said Ed Keller, president of The HearStrong Foundation.

?People need to know about the businesswoman who wears invisible hearing aids so she can discreetly hear her clients better, or the nine Olympic athletes who competed in the 2012 London games while wearing their athletically designed hearing devices, or the 4-year-old who loves to show off her pink hearing devices. HearStrong will break down stereotypes and show the humanity of hearing loss,? said Keller.

Roughly 36 million Americans suffer from hearing loss?and that number is on the rise. Recent studies have shown that one in five teenagers has hearing loss, as well as 60% of veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. However, due to lack of education and negative connotations, many people choose to suffer in silence.

The HearStrong Foundation will change that view once and for all. ????

About HearStrong:

The HearStrong Foundation strives to recognize the accomplishments of those who have overcome hearing loss and live their lives to the fullest. Headquartered in Syracuse, NY, the foundation is a world-wide advocate for hearing loss awareness, education and support. For more information about the foundation, or to nominate a HearStrong Champion, please visit hearstrong.org.
