Parts of Arctic now 'like a giant slushie'

Sea ice in the Arctic has hit a record low, and scientists say that it could accelerate global warming.?

Long-term thinning of Arctic sea ice combined with an intense, windy storm over the Arctic in early August contributed to a new record low for sea-ice extent, scientists said Monday (Aug. 27).

"It used to be?the Arctic ice cover?was like a big block of ice," said Walt Meier, a research scientist with the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) during a press conference held after the new record low was set on Sunday (Aug. 26). "Now it's become crushed ice and that is a lot easier to melt and melt more quickly. Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant slushie. [That] makes them more vulnerable to these types of storms."

The storm persisted over the central Arctic Ocean for several days, bringing warm and very windy conditions to the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas, followed by low temperatures. Strong wind and wave action from storms like this can increase melt by breaking up ice, according to a NSIDC report following the storm.

On Sunday (Aug. 26), Arctic sea-ice extent fell to a new record: 1.58 million square miles (4.10 million square kilometers), surpassing the previous low, 1.61 square miles (4.17 square kilometers) set on Sept. 18, 2007, the NSIDC reported. [10 Things to Know About Sea Ice]

Sea-ice watchers?saw this coming, at least to some degree.

"As early as maybe July we were able to project that the 2012 ice cover will likely be similar to 2007, but then in August, when we have this storm, the values for 2012 started to go down lower," said Josefino Comiso, a sea ice researcher with NASA.

Sea-ice extent describes the area of ocean?covered at least 15 percent by sea ice?as measured by satellite instruments. Continuous satellite measurements of sea-ice extent date back to the late 1970s.

Sea-ice extent grows and retreats with the season every year. While there are significant fluctuations in this cycle from year to year, by the late 1990s satellite measurements indicated there was a strong downward trend in sea-ice extent, said Claire Parkinson a climatologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

By the end of the 1990s, submarine data showed the ice was thinning as well, Parkinson said.

The old ice, which survives year after year and maintains thicknesses of 10 to 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), has been disappearing from the Arctic waters, Meier said. Now, Arctic sea ice has become thinner and is more easily melted or pushed around by storms, he said. "The Arctic Ocean is really a different place than it used to be," he said.

The loss of Arctic sea ice has serious implications for the animals ??polar bears?and walruses ? that use it as habitat.

Google lands patent for automatic object recognition in videos, leaves no stone untagged

Google has already been working on patents that could pick out faces and song melodies in our YouTube clips. Now, it might just have the ultimate tool: the technique in a just-granted patent could pick out objects in a video, whether they're living or not. Instead of asking the creator to label objects every time, Google proposes using a database of "feature vectors" such as color, movement, shape and texture to automatically identify subjects in the frame through their common traits -- a cat's ears and fast movement would separate it from the ball of yarn it's attacking, for example. Movie makers themselves could provide a lot of the underlying material just by naming and tagging enough of their clips, with the more accurate labels helping to separate the wheat from the chaff if an automated visual ranking system falls short. The one mystery is what Google plans to do with its newfound observational skills, if anything, although the most logical step would be to fill in YouTube keywords without any user intervention -- a potential time-saver when we're uploading that twelfth consecutive pet video.

Lance Armstrong faces big decision in doping case

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? Seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong faced a deadline Thursday to formally challenge sweeping doping allegations from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency or accept sanctions that could include a lifetime ban from the sport and potentially strip him of his titles.

Armstrong has strongly denied doping during his stellar career. The question was whether he will keep fighting USADA or officially give up and move on, risking a permanent stain on his legacy. The deadline was 2 a.m. EDT Friday.

Anti-doping officials have accused Armstrong of using performance-enhancing drugs, including steroids and blood boosters, and participating in a complex doping scheme on his teams while winning the Tour de France every year from 1999-2005. USADA officials say up to 10 former teammates are ready to testify against him and they have drug test results from 2009-2010 that are "consistent" with doping.

Armstrong says he has passed more than 500 drug tests in his career and accused USADA officials of waging a personal vendetta against him.

The 40-year-old Armstrong retired from cycling in 2011 and walked away without being charged following a two-year federal investigation into many of the same accusations he faces from USADA. That probe was closed in February. USADA officials told Armstrong in June they were pursuing separate, non-criminal doping charges.

Sanctions by USADA could damage his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists in history, an athlete who is a hero to many for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for the Lance Armstrong Foundation's work supporting cancer survivors and funding research.

Doping rumors and allegations have dogged Armstrong throughout his career. In a sport rife with cheaters, he has been under constant suspicion from those who refused to believe he was a clean rider winning cycling's premiere event against a field of doped-up competition.

The latest charges from USADA spawned a turf war between sports agencies. The Switzerland-based International Cycling Union said USADA did not have jurisdiction to pursue the case and urged the American agency to turn over evidence to them to determine if an investigation should proceed. The World Anti-Doping Agency supported USADA's claims of jurisdiction.

Armstrong sued in federal court to block USADA's case, arguing the arbitration process was unfair. His lawsuit was dismissed Monday by a federal judge, forcing Armstrong to decide whether to challenge the charges in arbitration ? something he says violates his constitutional rights to due process. USADA officials say their process is fair and widely recognized by sports agencies across the globe.

NASA to launch new mission to Mars to probe below the crust (+video)

NASA'S first mission deep below the surface of Mars aims to understand how the Red Planet formed and how that geological history compares with that of another rocky planet ? Earth.

    By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / August 20, 2012

This image provided by NASA shows an artist rendition of the proposed InSight (Interior exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport) Lander. NASA announced plans Monday to launch a relatively low-cost robotic lander in 2016 to probe what makes the Martian core so different from Earth's.

In 2016, NASA's Mars rover Curiosity will get a companion ? a new lander that aims to help scientists figure out how the planet formed and evolved, from core to crust.

In doing so, the project could shed additional light on how a planet that could have been hospitable to life early in its history became so hostile to it today, at least on the surface.

NASA officials announced the mission during a briefing late Monday afternoon. Known as InSight, the lander aims to use a seismometer to determine the size, makeup, and current condition of the planet's core, develop a profile of the planet's crust, analyze its mantle, measure the planet's marsquake activity, and measure the rate at which meteors are striking the planet's surface. In addition, the lander will sink a probe several meters into the soil to help estimate how the planet's temperature varies with depth.

As for habitability, on a planetary scale what goes on under the crust can be just as important as what goes on at the surface, astrobiologists note.

Global magnetic fields ? which Mars no longer has ? can deflect cosmic rays and charged particles from solar storms, which can threaten organisms on the surface. Earth's magnetic field results from the motions of an electrically conductive molten-iron outer core. On Mars, this dynamo has shut down.

On Earth, heat from the core also drives plate tectonics ? a planetary heat-exchanger in which the crust is constantly recycled between taffy-like material in the mantle and solid surface. Tectonics triggers volcanism, whose gases can play an enormous role in readjusting the composition of a planet's atmosphere ? including the amount of water vapor ? and hence its climate.

Does Mars have active tectonics today? "We just don't know," says John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for the agency's science-mission directorate.

This mission falls under the agency's Discovery program, which focuses on relatively low-cost missions whose hardware costs are capped at $425 million. Curiosity, by contrast, is part of the NASA's Mars Exploration Program. And the cost of its mission is estimated at $2.5 billion.

Despite it's relatively low cost, InSight aims to answer questions planetary scientists have been asking about the Red Planet for decades, Dr. Grunsfeld explained during the briefing.

"We're very confident that this will produce exciting science," Grunsfeld said.

    Business travel improves your happiness!

According to new research that captured data from more than 1,000 of the nation?s most frequent business travelers, time on the road adds value to their lives beyond business and is a source of personal happiness. The first-of-its-kind study, conducted by Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott, explored the emotions of the nation?s most experienced road warriors before, during and after a business trip.

?We feel the best way to help our guests succeed is to understand how they operate, so we can maximize their experience at our hotels,? said Shruti Buckley, vice president and global brand manager, Fairfield Inn & Suites. ?They demand an environment that allows them to be productive, yet one that is also inviting, upbeat and personal, so that?s what we deliver.?

Key Finding 1: Frequent Business Travel Enhances Your Life
Along with its ability to boost one?s professional development, the study found that frequent business travel has significant personal benefits.

? 76 percent of respondents reported that because they travel for business, they simply feel more prepared in life.
? 86 percent of respondents report that because they travel for business, they value time with family and friends more.
? 83 percent value their own personal time more.
? 92 percent say that taking business trips has made them a better overall traveler.
? 76 percent claim their friends view them as expert travelers.

?The overwhelming majority of travelers are satisfied or very satisfied with the amount they travel for business, which says a lot about the personal benefits to business travel,? said Buckley. ?Thirty percent would even like to travel more often.?

Key Finding 2: Frequent Business Travel Leads to Happiness
Frequent business travelers experience positive emotions, such as happiness and confidence, on the road.

Despite experiencing travel delays, missing their families, pets and home-cooked meals, losing their luggage or even skipping a family event, the vast majority of frequent business travelers report positive emotions when preparing for (86 percent) and during (88 percent) a trip. The most common emotions reported include feeling confident, knowledgeable, interested, calm, excited, eager, well-connected and happy.

?While more than half of frequent business travelers say they work twice as much when on the road, they also experience a certain feeling of freedom,? said Buckley. ?Sixty percent report feeling free to do whatever they want, which is empowering, as is getting their job done.?

Some frequent business travelers might be smiling because they often travel with a colleague. According to those who travel with others, there are both physical and psychological benefits to companion business travel, including:

    Having someone to talk to (52 percent);
    Sharing a workload (43 percent);
    Getting more work done (42 percent);
    Having more fun (39 percent);
    Building friendships (37 percent);
Feeling less lonely (27 percent) and,
    Feeling safer (27?percent).

Other frequent business travelers? happiness might stem from the aspects of travel they qualify as most enjoyable, such as experiencing new places, meeting new people, going out to eat, earning mileage or loyalty points, trying new foods, not going into the office, spending time alone and meeting up with friends. Twenty-one percent enjoy the fact that they can get more work done on the road. Fifty-nine percent say coming home from a trip is like a honeymoon with their spouse.

Key Finding 3: Frequent Business Travelers Can Teach Us A Lot
Study participants provided insights into strategies for success on the road.

Not surprisingly, when preparing for an average business trip, frequent business travelers report feeling prepared (62 percent) and confident (54?percent). The study unearthed some tips and tricks of the trade, from knowing where the local grocery store is to creating a workout routine so they can maintain their weight.

?We credit our frequent guests with developing best practices for business travel,? said Buckley. ?And, we?re setting out to share their know-how with everyone who travels for business.?

For example, some of the most frequent business travelers create an ?always pack list? to make preparation easier. And, in addition to cell phones, computers and reading material, items that frequent business travelers always keep on hand include business cards, medication, nutritional supplements, power cords and snacks. Activities they prioritize when notified of a trip include booking a hotel and travel arrangements, checking the weather and obtaining seasonally-appropriate attire, paying bills, and taking care of pets.

The majority of frequent business travelers (74 percent) also keep in touch with their friends and family at least once per day using cell phones, email, text messaging, social networks, instant messaging and Skype.

From photos to pillows, almost half (49?percent) bring a personal item along with them to remind them of home.

    Study Background
Fairfield Inn & Suites conducted this research study to discover how frequent business travel impacts one?s perspective on work, home life and personal well-being. An online survey of 1,001 frequent U.S. business travelers was conducted from May 1-11, 2012, using the field services of TNS. The margin of error for this sample is +/- 3.1 percent?at the 95 percent?confidence level.

IRS Offers Online Tool to Help College Students With Financial Aid ...

The IRS has announced that it is offering an online tool to help minimize time spent on the completion of the Department of Education?s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). By using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, applicants can automatically transfer required tax data from their federal tax returns directly to their FAFSA form.

This IRS tool is intended to be a free, easy and secure way to access and transfer tax return information onto the FAFSA form. According to the IRS, using the tool saves time, improves accuracy and may reduce the likelihood of the school?s financial aid office requesting that?the applicant?verify the information.

Here are some tips on using the IRS DRT:

    • Eligibility Criteria? To use the IRS DRT? to complete their? 2012 -2013 FAFSA form, taxpayers must:??

o????????? have filed a federal 2011 tax return,
o????????? possess a valid Social Security Number,
o????????? have a Federal Student Aid PIN (individuals who don?t have a PIN will be given the option to apply for one through the FAFSA application process), and?
o????????? have not changed marital status since Dec. 31, 2011.

    • Exceptions? If any of the following conditions apply to the student or parents, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool cannot be used for the 2012 FAFSA application:

o????????? an amended tax return was filed for 2011,
o????????? no federal tax return was filed for 2011,?
o????????? the federal tax filing status on the 2011 return is married filing separately or
o????????? a Puerto Rican or other foreign tax return has been filed.

Applicants who cannot use the IRS DRT to meet college requests for verification may need to obtain an official transcript from the IRS. Transcripts are not available until the IRS has processed the related tax return. To order tax return or tax account transcripts, visit IRS.gov and select ?Order a Transcript? or call the toll-free Transcript line at 1-800-908-9946.

In addition, the IRS offers money-saving information for college students and their parents about tax credits and deductions for qualifying tuition, materials and fees.

Kenneth Miller, Mennonite Pastor, Guilty Of Helping - Huffington Post

BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Just moments after a Mennonite pastor from Virginia was convicted of helping a woman flee the country rather than share custody of her daughter with her former same-sex partner, scores of his supporters poured out of the courthouse and began singing hymns.

It was their way of showing support for the Rev. Kenneth Miller, of Stuarts Draft, Va., after he was convicted Tuesday of aiding in international parental kidnapping, a high-profile crime that could send him to prison for three years.

As his supporters sang behind him, Miller said he was disappointed in the verdict but respected the decision in the case, which has drawn broad attention because of the legal and religious questions it raised about same-sex unions and child custody.

"I am willing to accept the consequences of my actions," said Miller, 46. "I am at peace with God. I am peace with my conscience and I give it over to God."

Miller was convicted of helping Lisa Miller and her daughter, Isabella, leave the country in September 2009, a month after a judge indicated he would turn custody of the girl over to Janet Jenkins, of Fair Haven, Vt., if Lisa Miller continued to defy a series of visitation orders.

The verdict against Kenneth Miller doesn't end the case.

As the jury was deliberating, Jenkins filed a lawsuit against both Millers and other people and organizations associated with the case, seeking unspecified monetary damages.

Kenneth and Lisa Miller are not related. Lisa and Isabella, now 10 years old, were last known to be in Nicaragua.

Kenneth Miller will remain free pending sentencing, although he was ordered to surrender his passport. He said an appeal would be up to his attorneys, who left the courthouse shortly after the verdict was read.

Jenkins was not in court at the time, but her attorney said she is pleased that Kenneth Miller was being held accountable.

"She hopes that the verdict will send a message to those who continue to aid and abet Lisa Miller in Nicaragua," said attorney Sarah Star. "Her greatest hope is that the government's efforts will lead to Isabella's safe return to Vermont."

During three days of testimony, prosecutors used cellphone records and sometimes-reluctant witnesses to lay out a broad network overseen by Kenneth Miller that helped Lisa Miller and Isabella travel first to Canada and then Nicaragua.

Prosecutors said Kenneth Miller arranged for another person to drive the two from Virginia to Buffalo, N.Y., where they crossed into Canada and were picked up by an Ontario Mennonite who took them to an airport. After they arrived in Nicaragua, prosecutors said, the two were cared for by American Mennonites who felt they needed to protect Isabella from what they considered a sinful lesbian lifestyle.

The U.S. does not have an extradition treaty with Nicaragua. The country is not a signer of the 1980 Hague convention on international child abductions, which is designed to return children illegally taken from member countries.

Lisa Miller and Jenkins entered into a civil union in Vermont in 2000, shortly after the state became the first to legally recognize same-sex relationships. Miller conceived the child through artificial insemination, and both acted as parents.

Lisa Miller later became an evangelical Christian and renounced her homosexuality. A child-custody case went to Vermont family court in 2004, after the couple dissolved the civil union. Lisa Miller, who moved to Lynchburg, Va., was given primary custody of Isabella, with Jenkins given visitation rights.

Lisa Miller appealed the case for years, but ultimately the courts in Virginia and Vermont determined the case would be bound by the Vermont family court order. A weekend visitation had been scheduled three days after Lisa Miller and Isabella fled.

Charges were dropped in October against an American Mennonite missionary living in Nicaragua, Timothy Miller, who is not related to the other Millers. Prosecutors said that Timothy Miller helped Lisa Miller reach Central America after being asked to do so by Kenneth Miller.

In brief but emotional testimony, Jenkins gave an overview of her relationship with Lisa Miller and a history of some of her visits with Isabella between the time the couple split up in 2003 and Lisa Miller and the girl left the country on Sept. 22, 2009.

Jenkins last saw Isabella in January 2009.

Mongolian court jails ex-president for corruption

A court in Mongolia has jailed former president Nambar Enkhbayar for four years after finding him guilty of corruption charges that he has called politically motivated.

Enkhbayar, 54, served as prime minister and then president for almost a decade until losing office in 2009. He was arrested in April in a dawn raid broadcast live on national television.

On Thursday, a Mongolian court found him guilty of misappropriating gifts intended for a monastery, along with other corruption charges, in a hearing broadcast on national television.

The court originally sentenced him to seven years, but commuted three, citing an amnesty law.

Enkhbayar, who was barred from running in Mongolia's June parliamentary elections, called the charges "groundless".

"I served the posts of president, prime minister and speaker of parliament. I never thought I would be accused groundlessly," Enkhbayar said in his testimony. He has said he will appeal the verdict.

Mongolia is ranked 120 out of 182 countries on the Corruption Perceptions Index compiled by the watchdog group Transparency International, tying with Bangladesh, Iran and Kazakhstan.

It is one of Asia's poorest nations but has increasingly lured foreign investors with its rich deposits of copper, gold, uranium, silver and oil.
