Part of Biloxi beach closed after sewage discharge | NOLA.com

BILOXI, Miss. ? A sewage discharge has closed several miles of beach in Biloxi.

Public Works Director Richard Sullivan says a brief power failure Saturday caused the discharge at a pump station.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality says sewage entered the storm drains and discharged along the beach.

Sullivan says a vacuum truck was sent out immediately and sewage didn't get onto the beach itself, but it was closed as a precaution.

MDEQ closed the beach Saturday from Mockingbird Lane to Edgewater Drive. It says it will lift the closure when tests indicate the water is safe.

Sullivan said Sunday that experts are working out how much sewage was discharged, but at a guess it might have been 1,000 to 2,000 gallons.

I'm quite interested in this. Do we make our own Character Sheet, or will one be provided later? Are the rules as for how you create your resources? Number of people? Are weapons limited to small arms?

You make your own sheet, but I will have to approve it. The resources will depend on the area. I know that some atlases have natural resources listed on them. The weapons will also have some to do with the resources available in the area, although I'll have to put more thought into that topic. The number of people (sorry for going out of order) will, as well, have o do with the area. Make what you think sounds reasonable for the size and current population, and I'll look it over.

So There.: Pumpkin-palooza!

To say I am a little obsessed with all things Pumpkin lately, would be the understatement of the season...but I doooon't caaaaaaare!!!!!
I dove full force into Fall Decor and Food and I'm not coming up for air until February :)
So There.

Trader Joe's has an abnormally large amount of seasonal pumpkin products right now, which I was ALL over.
I still want to go back for the pumpkin breakfast bars, and perhaps some ice cream.

The pumpkin cream cheese spread is amazing, you can almost (I absolutely did) eat it plain, but it is wonderful on toast...or a bagel, or pumpkin bread.
I love pumpkin butter, which, if you've never had it, isn't actually butter, but, more like a concentrated applesauce type spread, with great sweetness and spicy flavor. I drizzle this over pumpkin pancakes or the toast with the cream cheese.
I actually liked the greek yogurt, but it is not overly sweet, like pumpkin pie; rather very much a yogurt taste, with a lot of nutmeg.
The macarons are pretty typical, but fabulous nonetheless.?They come from the freezer section, and should sit out and thaw about 30min before serving (who has time for that?! Perhaps, if I had, my rating may have been even higher)
Pumpkin Chai Tea mix is lovely, very much a combo between a Starbucks PSL (Pumpkin Spice Latte, duh!) and their Chai Tea Latte.? It definitely is very sweet; I prefer this as an evening dessert (Yeah, I drink caffeine after 3pm, heck, after 9pm, and sleep just fine. *Shrug*), rather than to replace my morning English Breakfast tea. Too sweet for me first thing in the morning.
I know, I know, as much as I love desserts, I drink hot tea plain with no milk or sugar. I don't like overly sweet drinks, only food!
The pumpkin puree, I added to pancakes this morning, and made a yummy concoction by also adding sliced banana, diced apples, oats, lots of vanilla and pumpkin pie spice, as well as cream cheese to the whole wheat pancake batter. These pancakes I served (surprisingly!) with a drizzle of pumpkin butter and a dollop of pumpkin cream cheese. YUM! I love weekend breakfasts!

So, last on my Trader Joe's list is the ravioli, which I plan on having for dinner very soon.
The honey roasted flavor sounds amazing...I have been trying to decide what type of sauce to pair the pasta with.
World Market sells a pumpkin sauce made to serve over pasta, but I am also thinking a browned butter (with sage or rosemary?) topped with ricotta cheese and a honey drizzle might be nice, too. TBD.

Next up, a tutorial run down of my little Pumpkin Forest I've created!

Ghana's former first lady to run for president

ACCRA (Reuters) - Former Ghanaian first lady Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings announced on Saturday she has split from the ruling party that her husband founded to run for president under a new banner.

The move, backed by her husband former president Jerry Rawlings, threatens to split support for incumbent John Mahama, who is seeking re-election against his main opposition rival Nana Akufo-Addo on December 2.

"I stand before you today because I chose to become bolder and braver, and together we are going forward," Agyeman-Rawlings said in a speech broadcast on the radio.

She had tried to win the ruling NDC party's nomination last year, but lost to then-President John Atta Mills, who died in July and was replaced by Mahama.

Ghana, a cocoa, oil and gold producer, is one of West Africa's most stable countries, with more than 20 years of political transitions through elections following a flurry of coups.

Jerry Rawlings, who still enjoys broad popularity, said his wife left the ruling NDC because of bad governance.

"The NDC leadership had lost its moral high ground, (and was) involved in things that it should not have gotten into, corruption at the leadership level, etc," he said.

Agyemang-Rawlings, 63, is a women's rights advocate and is believed by many to have played an influential role during her husband's rule.

A leading member of the NDC said the move, which came days after Rawlings announced he would stand by the ruling party, would have "no consequence" on Mahama's campaign or the simultaneous legislative polls.

"I am urging our members to remain steadfast and not be rattled by this development," Richard Quashigah said.

Political observer and pollster, Ben Ephson, said he did not expect Agyeman-Rawlings to draw enough support to threaten Mahama's bid for re-election.

"...We don't think the party will make any significant impact on the fortunes of the NDC this December," he said.

Meteorite hunters: How to hunt a space rock

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Peter Willis and his team of researchers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., had a problem. Actually, more like they had a solution that needed a problem. Confused? Let's let Peter give it a shot ...

"My team and I came up with a new lab on a chip," said Willis, a scientist at JPL's Microdevices Lab. "It essentially miniaturizes an automated sample processing and analysis instrument that could be put aboard future spacecraft and sent to distant planets, moons and asteroids. One challenge we have is finding new and interesting samples to try our chip on."

The team had already gone into the field in quest of unique samples. Among their previous expeditions, they had hunted down trilobite fossils at the lava field in Amboy, Calif., and gathered samples from a hydrothermal vent near Yosemite National Park. But Willis and crew knew that when testing something destined for another world, it is good to try it on something not of this world. What they needed was a sign from above. On the evening of Aug. 21, 2012, a large fireball that turned night into day was reported over a mountain range halfway between Reno and Salt Lake City. By convention, the meteorite was named after the nearest town or prominent geographic feature.

"We first heard about the Battle Mountain meteorite on the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 5," said Willis. "We were on the road to Nevada the next afternoon." Meteorites are the remnants of asteroids and comets that have fallen to Earth. The challenge with these celestial visitors is that the longer they reside on Earth, the longer they are exposed to the corrosive effects of Earthly elements. JPL's miniature lab on a chip (information on the technology is available at: http://scienceandtechnology.jpl.nasa.gov/newsandevents/newsdetails/?NewsID=1576), was tasked with looking for chemical markers and amino acids that originated in space, not manufactured naturally here on Earth. To give their new instrument a true test run, Willis' team needed a factory-fresh piece of the heavens.

After a night at a local motel, Willis, along with fellow JPLers Amanda Stockton, Josh Schoolcraft, Fernanda Mora and Morgan Cable, packed hiking gear and a whole bunch of water into their SUV, and struck out for Battle Mountain, Nevada. Also along for the ride, and acting as the expedition's navigator, was J.P. Kirby.

Kirby, a senior scientist from the Planetary Science Institute in Tucson, Ariz., was navigating because meteor sightings usually occur when the space rock in question is hurtling through the atmosphere tens, if not hundreds of thousands, of feet above the ground. With a long way between hurtling airborne fireball and ground, there is a lot of room for error in plotting potential meteorite impact points. To derive the best educated guess as to where meteorites could be found, Kirby worked with Mark Fries, also of the Planetary Science Institute, and chief scientist of Galactic Analytics, LLC, San Diego, to plan their expedition.

"You read stories where people are taking their dog on a walk or do something else equally as innocuous and they stumble upon a meteorite," said Kirby. "Sometimes dumb luck does play a role in meteorite finds, but we were on a tight schedule, and the Battle Mountain area is big, hilly and treacherous, so a plan was definitely in order."

Working with weather radar data as well as testimonials from those who witnessed the fireball, Fries generated an impact zone for the team to concentrate their search. Using a tablet, Kirby combined the Fries' strewn field map with topographical maps of the Battle Mountain region.

"The first day, we covered 6 miles [10 kilometers] of mountainous terrain on foot but didn't find anything but terrestrial rocks and the occasional whiptail lizard," said Willis. "The next day was going to be our last shot, so we planned to drive much deeper into the estimated impact zone. The problem was, the most negotiable route ended up taking us through an active mine claim. We quickly found out that miners are not much interested in rocks from space."

Since Battle Mountain is in gold mine country, and gold is worth its weight in gold these days, unannounced visitors of any ilk are generally discouraged.

"We were fixing a flat when they drove up and told us to turn around," said Willis. "We needed to get the tire repaired anyway, so we headed back to town to regroup and look for a different route which didn't cross mining land."

The new route made full use of their SUV's 4-wheel drive capability. The team negotiated narrow, sloping, unpaved, sand-flooded switchbacks before arriving near the center of their estimated impact zone. By the time they parked, it was already mid-afternoon. For the next three hours, the team fanned out in different directions, but found nothing extraterrestrial in nature. By 4:30 p.m., it was getting to be time to wrap things up. The team did not want to negotiate those unpaved, dangerous switchbacks after dark if they didn't have to.

At 4:30, JPL's Josh Schoolcraft had just begun the final leg of his search ... when he saw it. Sitting there on the mountainside, amidst a tangle of sun-bleached dirt, pebbles and scrub was a jet-black rock.

"I knew right away it was what we were looking for," said Schoolcraft. "It was a carbonized, unweathered black mass, unlike anything else we had seen in our two days of searching. It clearly had not been there for very long."

Schoolcraft signaled and soon everyone gathered, surrounding their 3-inch-wide (8-centimeter) piece of the sky.

"Initially, everyone was basically freaking out," said Willis. "Then we got down to business and took pictures before collecting the meteorite in a sterile manner."

On the way back to the vehicle, Willis heard more shouting and thought his team had found another meteorite.

"But it was just an irritated rattlesnake," said Willis. "He went back into his hole and we went home, with a fresh chunk of outer space sealed in a sample bag."

A 1.4-pound (630-gram) fragment of the Battle Mountain meteorite is currently undergoing analysis by the team's lab-on-a-chip systems at JPL.

Movie review: Truth is more exciting than fiction in - Salt Lake Tribune

(This film image released by Warner Bros. Pictures shows Ben Affleck as Tony Mendez, center, in "Argo," a rescue thriller about the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis. "Argo" opens this weekend. The Salt Lake Tribune) 's Sean Means calls the movie "an exciting thriller that melds spy intrigue with human-scaled drama and Hollywood-industry comedy." (AP Photo/Warner Bros., Claire Folger)

Review ? Thriller recounts daring CIA rescue mission.

"Argo" is a marvelously exciting movie, a riveting thriller pulled from a real-life incident in which two of the most distrusted entities in American life ? the Central Intelligence Agency and Hollywood ? were the unmistakable good guys.

Director Ben Affleck ? and who could have guessed that name and job title would fit so well together? ? and screenwriter Chris Terrio weave together spy intrigue, political double talk, an international crisis and movie-industry self-deprecation into a story that?s so fantastic that it had to be true.

?

HHHhj

?Argo?

A CIA agent forms an outlandish plan to save six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis in this tension-filled true-life drama.

Where ? Theaters everywhere.

When ? Opens Friday, Oct. 12.

Rating ? R for language and some violent images.

Running time ? 120 minutes.

It?s 1979, after the revolution that deposed the Shah of Iran and put the Ayatollah Khomeini in power. When the Shah is allowed medical exile in the United States, Iranian rebels retaliate by overrunning the U.S. Embassy, taking 52 Americans hostage for 444 days ? a crisis whose resolution came in the final minutes of Jimmy Carter?s presidency. When the rebels invaded, though, six U.S. Embassy workers sneaked out a back way and were given refuge by the Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor (Victor Garber).

In early 1980, after a couple of months of the embassy "houseguests" hiding out, and with U.S. officials believing the Ayatollah?s regime will figure out there are Americans unaccounted for, the State Department tries to devise an escape plan. To CIA agent Tony Mendez (played by Affleck), an expert at such missions, the State Department?s solutions are unworkable and will likely get six Americans killed. Mendez hits upon an audacious idea: He will go undercover as a Hollywood producer making a movie in Iran and claim that the six embassy workers are his film crew.

It?s a long shot, but "this is the best bad idea we?ve got, by far," Mendez?s boss (Bryan Cranston) tells the State Department honchos.

Mendez enlists John Chambers (John Goodman), the Hollywood makeup effects artist who worked on "Planet of the Apes," and together they recruit a producer (Alan Arkin) to find a script ? a cheesy sci-fi adventure called "Argo" ? and to set up a dummy production company to look convincing. Mendez then flies into Tehran to give the embassy workers their cover stories, which they must memorize and recite well enough to convince Iran?s Revolutionary Guard.

Terrio?s script and Affleck?s direction combine these disparate settings ? the glamour of a phony Hollywood party and the chaos of battle-torn Tehran ? with an attention for detail that makes both worlds authentic and alive. This is especially evident in a powerful moment where a script reading of the sci-fi film is intercut with propaganda speechmaking by the Iranian hostage-takers.

Affleck?s previous movies as director, the Boston-based crime dramas "Gone Baby Gone" and "The Town," drew favorable comparisons to Sidney Lumet?s best work ? and "Argo" also shows that Lumet touch for combining political importance and white-knuckle tension. Affleck also shows a sure hand with complex storytelling, neatly weaving the CIA office dynamics with the emotional stresses of the embassy "houseguests." And, just to show how good a director he is, he gets a soulful, stirring performance from none other than Ben Affleck.

Turkey: Syrian plane was carrying ammunition

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? A plane intercepted by Turkish fighter jets on its way from Moscow to Damascus was carrying equipment and ammunition destined for the Syrian Defense Ministry, Turkey's prime minister said Thursday.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan's comments follow a fierce denial by Syria that anything illegal had been aboard the Airbus A320 that was forced by Turkey to land in Ankara late Wednesday. Syria, whose relations with neighboring Turkey have plummeted over the Syrian war, branded it an act of piracy.

Earlier in the day, Turkish officials had rejected claims by Syria's ally, Russia, that Turkey had endangered the lives of Russian citizens on board the aircraft.

"These were equipment and ammunitions that were being sent from a Russian agency ... to the Syrian Defense Ministry," Erdogan told reporters in Ankara.

"Their examination is continuing and the necessary (action) will follow," he added.

Yeni Safak, a newspaper close to the Turkish government, reported Thursday there were 10 containers aboard the plane, whose contents included radio receivers, antennas and equipment "thought to be missile parts."

Turkish state-run television TRT also reported the plane was carrying military communications equipment. Neither TRT nor the newspaper cited sources for their claims.

A Western diplomat in Ankara told The Associated Press that Turkish authorities had found "military equipment" on board the plane, but did not elaborate. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about sensitive issues.

The plane was allowed to continue to Damascus after several hours, without the cargo.

"As you know, defense industry equipment or weapons, ammunitions and such equipment cannot be carried on passenger planes," Erdogan said. "It is against international rules for such things to pass through our air space."

Erdogan refused to say how ? or from whom ? Turkey had learned that the twice-weekly scheduled flight would be used to transport military gear to Syria.

"As you will appreciate, those who gave the tip, which establishments, these things cannot be disclosed," he said.

The United States said it backed Turkey's decision to intercept the plane.

"Any transfer of any military equipment to the Syrian regime at this time is very concerning, and we look forward to hearing more from the Turkish side when they get to the bottom of what they found," said State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland.

She declined to comment on Turkish reports that the intelligence on the plane's cargo had come from the United States.

Turkey has called for Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and Damascus accusing Turkey of supporting the rebels. The two neighbors have traded artillery fire over Syria's northern border throughout the past week.

Hours before the Turkish statement, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Ivanovsky had held talks with Turkish officials at the Foreign Ministry.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich had said earlier Thursday that Moscow was concerned that lives and safety of the 35 passengers, including 17 Russian citizens, had been endangered.

He said Turkey without explanation denied Russian consular officials and a doctor access to the passengers, who had not been allowed into the airport for eight hours or provided with food.

"The Russian side continues to insist on an explanation for the Turkish authorities' actions toward Russian citizens and on the adoption of measures to avoid such incidents in the future," Lukashevich said in a statement.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying that the pilot of the Syrian Air plane from Moscow had been warned of Turkey's intention to ground it as he approached from the Black Sea on Wednesday evening. It said he was given the chance to turn back, but that he decided to continue his course.

Rejecting claims that passengers were ill-treated, the Turkish statement said they were allowed to leave the plane if they wanted and that there was a medical crew and ambulances on standby. It also said that the pilot did not provide a passenger list and therefore Turkish officials did not know there were Russians on board until after it landed.

Separately, the Foreign Ministry said it had submitted a formal protest note to Syria for the violation of civil aviation rules and declared Syrian air space unsafe for Turkish planes.

Syrian Transportation Minister Mohammad Ibrahim Said said Turkey's decision to force the plane to land amounted to piracy.

The general manager of the Syrian Civil Aviation Agency also blasted Turkey's forced landing of the plane, calling it "contrary to regulations and aviation norms."

Ghaidaa Abdul-Latif told reporters in Damascus that the plane's pilots were not asked to land but were instead surprised by Turkish F-16 fighter jets, which forced them to land.

A Syrian Airlines engineer who was aboard, Haithan Kasser, said armed Turkish officials boarded the plane and handcuffed the crew before inspecting packages that he said contained electrical equipment.

Abdul-Latif said the officials seized some packages after presenting official documents.

Turkey's Transportation Minister Binali Yildirim said on Thursday that the cargo "was not suitable for a civil plane."

The Moscow airport that cleared the Syrian plane for takeoff denied there was any forbidden cargo on board.

"No objects whose transportation would have been forbidden under aviation regulations were on board," said Vnukovo Airport spokeswoman Yelena Krylova, ITAR-Tass reported

Krylova said all documentation related to the cargo was in order. She would not say who had sent the cargo.

A Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman also denied that the plane carried any arms or prohibited goods and called on Turkey to return the plane's full contents.

Also on Thursday, family and supporters of two journalists believed to be detained in Syria appealed in Istanbul for their release. Arzu Kadoumi said her husband Bashar Fahmi, a reporter for Al-Hurra network, and his Turkish cameraman, Cuneyt Unal, had been missing for 53 days.

Inside Syria, battles continued in the southern Idlib province that abuts the Turkish border as rebels sought to consolidate control of a strategic town on the country's main north-south highway. Rebels said they captured Maaret al-Numan on Wednesday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said clashes continued Thursday after rebels attacked a military convoy and nearby army checkpoints. The fighting killed more than a dozen people, the Observatory said.

The Observatory also said eight people were killed and another eight wounded when unknown gunmen fired on their bus near the coastal city of Tartous. Syria's state news agency SANA said the men were Syrian workers returning from Lebanon.

Syrian opposition activists estimate more than 32,000 people have been killed since March 2011 when the uprising against Assad's regime began.

In the southern province of Daraa, gunmen shot dead the brother of a member of Syria's parliament while raiding his home, the Observatory and SANA said. The parliament member, Khalid al-Abboud, regularly defends the Syrian regime on TV.

The Observatory said gunmen also killed the son of another legislator, Mohammed Kheir al-Mashi, at his home in Idlib province.

Activist claims could not be independently verified because of restrictions on reporting in Syria.

State-run Syrian TV said there was an explosion in the capital Thursday night the Ministry of Education and the Military Court. A Syrian official said the blast wounded two people and caused material damage. The official asked that his name not be used because he is not allowed to speak publicly.

Researchers ID unique geological 'sombrero' uplift in South America

Friday, October 12, 2012

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have used 20 years of satellite data to reveal a geological oddity unlike any seen on Earth.

At the border of Argentina, Bolivia and Chile sits the Altiplano-Puna plateau in the central Andes region, home to the largest active magma body in Earth's continental crust and known for a long history of massive volcanic eruptions. A study led by Yuri Fialko of Scripps and Jill Pearse of the Alberta Geological Survey has revealed that magma is forming a big blob in the middle of the crust, pushing up the earth's surface across an area 100 kilometers (62 miles) wide, while the surrounding area sinks, leading to a unique geological phenomenon in the shape of a Mexican hat that the researchers have described as the "sombrero uplift."

Since the magma motion is happening at a great depth and at a fairly slow rate?the earth's surface rises at about a centimeter per year or roughly the rate fingernails grow?there is no immediate danger of a volcanic outpouring, the researchers said.

The details of the study, which was funded by the National Science Foundation, are published in the October 12 issue of the journal Science.

"It's a subtle motion, pushing up little by little every day, but it's this persistence that makes this uplift unusual. Most other magmatic systems that we know about show episodes of inflation and deflation," said Fialko, a professor of geophysics in the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps.

The researchers have attributed the observed steady motion and sombrero-shaped deflection of the earth's surface to a large blob of magma, called a "diapir" in geological terms, forming on top of the Altiplano-Puna magma body. Diapirs have been studied using geologic records in rocks frozen many millions of years ago, but the new study is the first to identify an active magma diapir rising through the crust at present day.

Fialko said a similar uplift phenomenon is occurring near Socorro, New Mexico, but at a much lower rate.

"Satellite data and computer models allowed us to make the important link between what's observed at the surface and what's happening with the magma body at depth," said Fialko.

Fialko said the sombrero uplift could provide insights into the initial stages of massive magmatic events leading to the formation of large calderas. Such "super-volcano" events erupt thousands of cubic kilometers of magma into the atmosphere and can affect local and global climates. Compared with the Icelandic volcano eruption in 2011 that spewed large amounts of ash into the atmosphere and disrupted global air travel, Fialko said, a super-volcano event would be thousands of times greater.

"Those were truly disaster-type events," said Fialko. "Fortunately such events haven't happened in human history, but we know they did happen in the Altiplano-Puna area in the past."

Obama administration and China feud over clean energy

A battle over cheap solar panels is ratcheting up tensions between the US and China and further complicating the Obama?administration's?fraught relationship with clean energy.

Republicans have used the high-profile bankruptcy of Solyndra, the solar panel manufacturer that received $528 million in federal loan guarantees, to pummel the president on energy policy. Last month, slow sales forced bailout-backed GM to offer hefty discounts for the Chevy Volt. The tepid growth of the electric car industry has led some to question the president's use of taxpayer money to promote alternative fuel sources.?

Now, energy rifts with China are exacerbating tensions between the two countries, while further complicating the Obama administration's relationship with clean energy.

Late last month, Obama blocked Ralls Corp., a small Chinese company, from investing in a wind farm project near the site of a military training site in Oregon. The president invoked a rare power granted by the Defense Production Act of 1950, concerned that the companies backing the project "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States," as the order reads.

Ralls Corp. responded in kind, suing the president.?

A decision Wednesday from the US Department of Commerce threatened to further strain relations between the two countries. The department ruled that Chinese companies, backed by foreign subsidies, were "dumping" solar panels into the US market?selling their products at prices ranging from 18.32 to 249.96 percent below fair value.

The final ruling would impose tariffs of 24 percent to 36 percent on solar panels imported from China, the New York Times reported.?

"The impact on the domestic industry has just been devastating. I think we're unfortunately up to 13 companies where there has been either a shutdown or a bankruptcy or significant work layoffs due to the Chinese imports,"?Tim Brightbill, lead attorney for SolarWorld Americas and other US producers told Reuters in the days leading up to the ruling.

It's not the first time the Commerce Department has imposed tariffs on China for dumping activities. In June, the department found that Chinese companies were illegally selling wind turbine towers below their market price and would have to pay?duties of 20.85 to 72.69 percent on imports.

The recent jabs are the latest in an ongoing back-and-forth between an administration protective of American manufacturers and an economic juggernaut flooding the global clean energy market with inexpensive products.

"The United States is provoking trade friction in the new energy sector," Shen Danyang,?China's Commerce Ministry spokesman,?told Reuters,?"and sending a negative signal to the world that stirs global trade protectionism and obstructs the sector's development."?

Taliban says they will try to kill schoolgirl who defied them

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (Reuters) - A Pakistani schoolgirl fighting for her life after being shot by Taliban gunmen was transferred on Thursday from a hospital in a province that is a militant haven to a specialist hospital in the army garrison town of Rawalpindi.

Malala Yousufzai, 14, was unconscious in critical condition after being shot in the head and neck as she left school on Tuesday, but doctors said she had moved her arms and legs slightly the night before.

Pakistani surgeons removed a bullet on Wednesday from Yousufzai who was shot by the Taliban for speaking out against the militants and promoting education for girls.

Her courage made her a national hero. The shooting has drawn condemnation from world leaders and many Pakistanis.

Yousufzai began standing up to the Pakistani Taliban when she was just 11, when the government had effectively ceded control of the Swat Valley where she lives to the militants.

Her father, Ziauddin Yousufzai, who runs a girls' school, said his daughter had defied threats for years, believing the good work she was doing for her community was her best protection.

A Reuters correspondent watched as she was moved from an army hospital in the regional capital of Peshawar to the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology in Rawalpindi to help her treatment.

"Pray for her," her distraught uncle, Faiz Mohammad, said before the ambulance left the hospital.

A husband-and-wife team of two British doctors who were attending a seminar in Pakistan at the time of the attack on Thursday joined local surgeons in treating Yousufzai.

She was shot with two other girls on Tuesday as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad. One of the girls is out of danger and the other remains in critical condition.

A Taliban spokesman said she was targeted for trying to spread Western culture and that they would try to kill her again if she survived.

"BARBARIC AND COWARDLY"

Authorities had identified her attackers, said regional governor Masood Kausar. The local government has posted a 10 million rupee reward for their capture.

"The security agencies are closely working with each other and they have a lot of information about the perpetrators. We hope our security agencies will soon capture them and bring to justice," he said.

The attack outraged many in Pakistan, with small, impromptu rallies held in her support in many cities. Schools had also closed across Swat in protest over the shooting and a small demonstration was held in her hometown of Mingora.

Pakistan's president, prime minister, and heads of various opposition parties joined human rights group Amnesty International and the United Nations in condemning the attack.

On Wednesday, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United States had offered any assistance necessary.

"The president found the news reprehensible and disgusting and tragic," Carney told reporters.

"Directing violence at children is barbaric, it's cowardly, and our hearts go out to her and the others who were wounded as well as their families."

Yousufzai had spent the last three years campaigning for girls' education after the Taliban shut down girls' schools. She received Pakistan's highest civilian award but also a number of death threats.

In 2009, the army pushed the Taliban out of her hometown of Mingora, but the attack showed the militia's ability to strike even inside heavily patrolled towns.

Twitter: Changing life for writers 140 characters at a time | New York ...

photo.pngBY CHRISTOPHER YOUNG

Creation through limitation is a concept that has long been familiar to writers.
?
We see it through the persistent use of ancient poetic forms such as haiku, as well as the experiments of the Oulipo???a French-speaking writers? circle that can count Italo Calvino as an alumnus???in the 1960s. We still see it in many novels? exploitation of genre conventions, and, according to Robert McCrum?s latest article in The Guardian, we also see it in the brevity enforced by microfiction and flashfiction competitions.

However, one increasingly pressing question is being asked by today?s twitterati: is this brevity, which has long been practiced???and which Shakespeare famously argues is the soul of wit???now being imposed upon writers by Twitter?

McCrum?s argument is that Twitter is changing literature. He writes of self imposed concision: ?In the age of Twitter, such an innovative approach to narrative is peculiarly suggestive and potentially addictive.? Its hard to disagree.

We all know Hemingway?s six word story????For sale: baby?s shoes, never worn????and we?ve even had short stories that, aside from their titles, contain no words at all. Dave Eggers? "There Are Some Things He Should Keep To Himself," take a bow. What, then, is to stop a 140 character tweet from being the latest narrative medium for writers everywhere?

?

New York based tweeter Teju Cole???photographer, flaneur and author of the brilliant ?Open City????is just one established writer who uses his Twitter account creatively, tweeting snippets of prose that often deal with the state of life in his native Nigeria. For example: ?Lagos police arrested 33 people for using the wrong preposition: apparently, riding in a train is fine, but riding on a train isn?t.? He has also tweeted his own views on the site?s literary advantages: ?Twitter is unbeatable for aphorism, great for anecdote, decent for poetry, useless for analysis, and the eye of the newt for surrealism.?

?

Of course, the idea of Twitter?s use as a medium for literature has its critics, and high profile ones at that. Jonathan Franzen has called the site ?unspeakably irritating? and in one attack described tweeting as ?like writing a novel without using the letter P.? What Franzen makes of Georges Perec?s novel ?La Disparition,? which is over a hundred 300 pages long and is written without once using the letter E, has not been documented.

There are some, however, who would argue that while it will limit fiction, Twitter is a more natural fit for poetry. It is easy to see why poets might be drawn to the medium: It affords the same sense of distillation that is the essence of much poetry; publication, and sometimes appreciation, is only a click away.

Some poets see Twitter as more than a simple form???it can even serve as a source for inspiration. The recently established blog Bad Robot Poetry?publishes poetry influenced by Twitter, as well as by Facebook and the cult of the "meme."?

Whether as a facilitator or an inspiration, it seems that Twitter is insinuating itself into the world of literary creation. The format may be new but the principle is as old as writing itself ???that creativity is often borne of constraint. It?s early days, but the time may come when the mentioning of 140 characters will remind bookworms of more than just the cast list of a Tolstoy novel.

Middle East tensions push oil higher; euro up

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The euro made its first gain in four days on Thursday after the IMF said euro zone economies should have more time to cut budget deficits, while oil prices rose on escalating tensions between Syria and Turkey.

European and U.S. shares climbed after data showed further signs of improvement in the U.S. labour market, though Wall Street pared its gains to end the day little changed.

The data overshadowed a downgrade of Spain's credit rating by Standard & Poor's late on Wednesday.

In the currency market, the euro was the primary beneficiary of improved sentiment. It recovered from a more than one-week low, last trading at $1.2926, up 0.4 percent.

Christine Lagarde, the IMF's managing director, said she favoured giving debt-burdened Greece and Spain more time to reduce their budget deficits because cutting too far and too fast would do more harm than good.

Lagarde's comments were seen supporting stability in the euro zone. One of the key debates to come from the euro zone's debt crisis is whether the steep cuts needed to get budgets in order come at the expense of economic growth.

Spanish bond yields turned lower, erasing an earlier spike to near the critical 6.0 percent mark seen as unsustainable after Standard & Poor's cut the country's credit rating.

S&P cut Spain's rating two notches to BBB-minus, one step from junk status, warning that an intensifying recession and poor response from euro zone policymakers to the crisis had left Spain highly vulnerable.

"Investors were initially spooked by the bad news from the euro zone, but soon realized that bad news is actually good news overall due to the fact that this now speeds up the timeline for Spain to request a bailout," said Neal Gilbert, market strategist at GFT in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Ten-year Spanish yields were down 5.4 basis points on the day at 5.77 percent, having hit a session high at 5.96 percent earlier.

Markets expect Spain to be the first of the euro zone's "big four" economies to require a rescue package.

The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note rose 2/32 higher in price, yielding 1.673 percent.

Tensions in the Middle East pushed Brent crude up $1.38 to $115.71 a barrel, while U.S. crude futures settled up 82 cents at $92.07 per barrel. Maintenance curbs on North Sea output also pushed prices higher.

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said a Syrian passenger plane forced to land in Ankara was carrying Russian-made munitions destined for Syria's defence ministry. Grounding of the plane was another sign of Ankara's growing assertiveness over the crisis in its war-torn neighbour.

"The Syrian situation is heating up and there are fears about Turkey, a NATO member, retaliating and contagion in the region," said Bjarne Schieldrop, analyst at SEB in Oslo.

Equities initially rose after news that claims for U.S. jobless benefits fell last week to the lowest in more than four and a half years.

Still, a drop in shares of Apple Inc helped Wall Street cut its gains in afternoon trading.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 18.58 points, or 0.14 percent, to 13,326.39. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index edged up 0.28 points, or 0.02 percent, at 1,432.84. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 2.40 points, or 0.08 percent, to 3,049.38.

Apple fell 2 percent after a U.S. appeals court overturned a preliminary injunction on the sale of Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy Nexus smartphone.

Shares of Sprint Nextel Corp drew the heaviest action on the New York Stock Exchange after news that the firm was in talks over a potential sale to Japanese mobile carrier Softbank Corp.

Sprint was up 14.2 percent.

In Europe, the FTSEurofirst 300 ended up 0.8 percent, while the MSCI global index gained 0.4 percent.

The recap of the first two games are on here, but the decisive game 3 with the momentum still switched over from Counter Logic Gaming EU seems to be going there way. Will Team World Elite have an opportunity, chance to defeat the team composure of CLG EU.

Game 3

Bans and Picks

CLG ? Twisted Fate/Blitzcrank/Orianna
WE ? Anivia/Irelia/Cho?Gath

CLG ? Jayce/Skarner/Kog?Maw/Karthus/Nunu
WE ? Corki/Maokai/Leona/Olaf/Vladimir

Again the team composition World Elite wants to win early game and secure the mid-late game because they do not want to keep playing against CLG.EU?s strong point which is their late game. The game starts off super secure with both teams defending each other and counter invading each others blue. Lane swap has been an immediate thing World Elite has been more comfortable with, and also with the composition they needed to do the switch. They actually take the early game great, getting 3 ganks of three to four men on top and bottom respectively. The only problem is CLG EU kept up with the aggression by getting clutch Karthus requiems to trade kills and Kog?maw at the 8 min mark pick off Olaf for extra gold as well. The early lead for World Elite only gave them a slim 10 cs lead for both carries. The first big play that changed the aggression happens at the 15 min mark. Corki initiates onto Jayce and almost kills him down with the help of Maokai, unfortunately with CLG EU closing in Skarner impales Corki while Jayce flashes out of Maokai?s maelstrom on top of the requiem coming from Karthus it sealed the deal onto Corki?s demise and also the second dragon for CLG EU. The biggest play of the match which turned the gold to CLG EU?s favor was the 29th minute mark. CLG EU catches World Elite trying to push down the 2nd top turret, in turn maokai was split off from the group; a grouped CLG EU initiates a fight and catches the reformed WE team at CLG EU Blue buff. The closed space gets Karthus to do ?tons of damage? with defile on top of lay wastes plus the Wall of Pain destroys most of the magic resist/health from WE. The result was a 5 for 2 ace for CLG EU plus a well played baron. Overall that baron launched the taking of all turrets and inhibitors for CLG EU. The last play Vladimir in a last ditch effort catch 2 members of CLG EU under a Hemoplague but CLG EU with Guardian Angels and more damage on top of them trade a four for one, and push in to destroy all the nexus turrets. CLG EU finishes off the nexus and takes the match!
