Guide for Foreign Students Coming to the United States for College

airplaneCollege aged students from all over the world are coming to the United States each year to get their higher education. The thing is that it is not a simple process. The United States has several laws, rules and regulations that must be followed in order for foreign students to gain access to its boarders and take advantage of the educational services that the United States has to offer. This article will serve the purpose of showing foreign students some of the most basic and practical steps that they will need to undertake in order to come to America so they can get their Western education.

Apply

The first thing you must do, (the same thing ALL students must do even if they are American) is apply to the college of your choice. Find out what types of application materials you need for your college choice and make sure that you provide every requested piece of information that is needed the first time. Not doing so will delay the application process and perhaps make you miss your chance for the next semester. In order to apply you must also print out the International Application Form that is required of all foreign students. This application will cost you a $20 fee that is non-refundable.

Academic Requirements

All foreign students must have finished their secondary education. In order to prove this, request all of your official educational records and all the results of your exams. If these documents are in your native language, they must also be accompanied by documents translated in English for ease of reading during the application process. The actual documents are not accepted unless they are original; copies are not accepted. Your documents must show no less than a C average or you do not qualify to come to the United States to get a higher education. Some colleges may require that you have already taken English as a second language so make sure of this requirement before you apply. (See below for more information on this possible requirement.)

English Proficiency Requirement

Most colleges in the United States require that you can demonstrate a certain proficiency in the English language. This is done through a test known as TOEFL (Test of English Foreign Language). You must score at least a 500 to meet the requirement.

After You are Admitted

Now that you have made it into your American college you have to get a student visa. Apply for this along with your passport. The steps to get your visa are as follows:

  • Pay the fee known as the SEVIS fee before you apply for the visa. This will allow you to be looked over by the Department of Homeland Security. Go to www.fmjfee.com/i90fee.
  • Visit your local Consulate or Embassy. You can find this information http://travel.state.gov
  • Make an appointment for your Visa appointment. Set your interview for as soon as you can to expedite the process.
  • Learn about all the documents and information you will need for your interview beforehand and bring all the required information or you will have to reschedule your appointment.
  • Practice for your interview.

Transferring Credits

If you have credits from another university in your country than see about transferring them to your new American college. Contact your new university too see how this process works so that you can get credit for the classes you have already taken. This will require a university release form that you can fax, mail or email in PDF format.

The best friend you can have during this entire process if you international student advisor. They will walk you through every step of the process to ensure that your experience is a successful one and that your dreams of getting a higher education in America come true!
